Help on the way for the Marion VA Hospital

Two years after major surgery was halted at the Marion VA Medical Center, congressional leaders from the region say they hope help is finally on the way.

U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Roland W. Burris (D-Ill.) and U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello (D-Belleville) met with Marion VA leaders as well as patients and families during a visit to the facility today (Thursday). It comes a little more than a week after an inspector general’s report showed significant problems remain at the facility, two years after nine patients died as a result of sub-standard care.

A new director for the Marion VA has been named. James Roseborough is the former network director of the VA Great Lakes Health Care System. Roseborough says he’s ready to get to work, and enthusiastic about filling vacant positions and resuming in-patient procedures at the Marion hospital.

A quality assessment team is on its way to Marion to further study problems there. Durbin and other leaders say they expect a report card on the facility’s progress before the end of the fiscal year (Sept. 30, 2010)
