Frerichs Accuses Rutherford Of Using State Funds For Self-Promotion
A Democratic candidate for Illinois Treasurer is criticizing the current Republican officeholder for his spending on state travel.
State Sen. Mike Frerichs of Champaign told reporters at a news conference in Chicago Wednesday that Dan Rutherford of Chenoa is "using his office to promote himself" by traveling around the state to promote an unclaimed property program overseen by his office.
Rutherford is one of four Republicans running for governor. His campaign spokesman dismisses the criticism. He says the treasurer is very careful about separating state and political business, and that the property program is now more successful.
Frerichs formally announced his candidacy Wednesday. He has no primary opponent, and could face Republican state Rep. Tom Cross or Westmont accountant Bob Grogan in November.
