Republican Bruce Rauner's spokesman says U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin's comments about the venture capitalist being "out of touch" are a distraction.
On Friday Durbin used an annual Martin Luther King commemoration breakfast to call for raising the minimum wage. He also blasted Rauner for his evolving position on the matter. Rauner first said he'd advocate for lowering Illinois' rate by $1 to the national $7.25 an hour. Later he said he'd be in favor of raising it under the right circumstances.
Durbin says Rauner's initial stance isn't good for working families.
But Rauner spokesman Mike Schrimpf says the attention on the campaign shows that Gov. Pat Quinn's Democratic allies are scared of Rauner shaking up the system. He says they're trying to distract from Quinn's "disastrous" record.
