Volunteers continue to pour into Brookport to help clean up the area devastated by a tornado six days ago.
If you’re planning to go help this Saturday, registration starts at 8:30 a.m. at the old Veach station on the corner of Illinois 145 and U.S. 45. You’re asked to dress appropriately and bring gloves, tools and food and water. There will be no volunteer efforts on Sunday – they’ll resume Monday morning at 8:30.
IDOT and the Massac County Highway Department have arranged large debris removal in Brookport on Monday morning – debris should be placed curbside.
Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon visited Brookport yesterday, while Senator Dick Durbin was in Washington, Illinois.
After touring what he called the worst tornado damage he has ever seen, Durbin said he hopes the federal government gives financial help to Washington, which it did not do for Harrisburg after the Leap Day 2012 tornado.
And even as we’ve seen this disaster bring an outporing of support and help, the Illinois State Police is warning tornado victims that they could be easy prey for looters and scam artists. Police are asking residents of Brookport to be especially cautious when giving out personal information over the phone.
