Dynegy Inc. Receives More Time For Pollution Controls

The Illinois Pollution Control Board has agreed to give a Texas company extra time to install pollution controls at five Illinois coal-fired power plants.

Houston-based Dynegy Inc. is acquiring the plants from Ameren Corp., but said the deal hinged on getting a waiver allowing it to delay installing soot-control equipment until 2020.

The state pollution panel agreed to the extension Thursday.

St. Louis-based Ameren already has a waiver for the plants after claiming financial hardship, but the pollution panel had refused to transfer it to Dynegy.

That company sought its own waiver, citing the same economic conditions — including lower electricity prices driven, in part, by competition from natural gas plants.

Environmental groups had filed formal objections. They say the upgrades are needed and Dynegy was a willing buyer.
