The Herrin City Council is allowing the excavations at the city cemetery to continue.
The council agreed during their meeting Monday night to let the researchers from Eastern Illinois dig in the cemetery. The remains of five unidentified people were found in plots already assigned to others on Friday.
The researchers will dig in lots 15 and 41 with no deadline. Reports say the remains were put back where they were found, and some remains of the poor could be moved since they do not have legal rights on their burial grounds.
