Illinois Man Convicted of Tax Fraud

A southwestern Illinois man who insisted he was not bound by U.S. tax laws left a federal courtroom yesterday bound – in handcuffs.

A federal jury decided 47-year-old Destry Marcotte of Belleville is guilty of tax fraud.

Marcotte claimed more than 600 thousand dollars in tax refunds over several years by submitting false claims.

He claimed to be a "sovereign citizen" who was not subject to tax laws.

He’ll be sentenced January 17. He’s facing 20 years in prison.
