Money Missing From the Williamson County Circuit Clerk's Office

Illinois State Police are investigating the Williamson County Circuit Clerk’s office.

"It appears that there was money stolen from the Circuit Clerk's department," Williamson County Commissioner Ron Ellis says. "It involves employees of the county."

Ellis says he couldn't comment on the amount of money or the specific employees targeted by the investigation. According to multiple reports, the investigation is focused on three circuit clerk employees and their handling of cash bond payments in the office.

"If everything goes right, hopefully we'll have everything wrapped up by Friday (August 9)," Ellis says. "Then the report will be issued to the (Williamson County) State's Attorney's office and you know that they're going to bring in a special prosecutor because there's absolutely no way that our State's Attorney's office can investigate, prosecute or do anything with this case."

Ellis says that would be a conflict of interest.
The Circuit Clerk’s office and State Police are not commenting on the matter.
