More New Students At SIU Means Less Space in the Dorms

An unexpected jump in new students is causing a bit of an issue for SIU.

Spokesman Rod Sievers explains.

“Southern Illinois University is expecting its largest freshman class in perhaps 16 years,” Sievers says. “And there is a requirement at the university that all freshmen live in University Housing. Well, that’s going to put on a crunch on our housing capacity, and it will probably all shake out in the end.”

Sievers went on to say that typically, there are several students who don’t show up for move-in day. But for at least the first few days, some dorms will have an extra occupant.

“It’s a good problem to have because its an indication that a lot of our efforts aimed at increasing enrollment at SIU are starting to pay off.”

The first day of classes is Monday, August 19th.
