Rt. 13 Expansion Delay

The start date for construction between Shawnee Trail and Greenbriar Road on Route 13 is being pushed back again, this time at the Illinois Department of Transportation’s request.

Southern Illinois Asphalt out of Marion was set to begin the Route 13 project Monday night while also working on the I-57 lane expansion at the Marion interchange near Johnston City. But IDOT’s Keith Roberts says unforeseen circumstances on I-57 forced a change.

“The department requested they double-staff the I-57 project, and that occured this past week. So we gave a them reprieve on the start date of the Illinois 13 project.”

Roberts says road work is expected to begin next Tuesday, if no more problems arise. Expected finish is sometime in September.

This is the second time work has been pushed back. Roberts says the first time was due to an issue with the contractor. If there is another non-weather delay, Roberts says they could fine Southern Illinois Asphalt if the work isn't completed on time.
