The hiring of a new lobbyist for Southern Illinois University is drawing the ire of some members on the Board of Trustees.
The Board approved the hiring of John Charles to the position of executive director of governmental affairs by a 4-2 vote at yesterday’s meeting at the Medical School in Springfield. SIU President Glenn Poshard has been filling in for that role since December 2011.
Trustee Roger Herrin voted against Charles because he was working for former SIU lobbyist David Gross. Gross is the Chief of Staff for Senate President John Cullerton, who helped block the Governor’s three appointments to the Board earlier this year.
Trustee Don Lowery also voted against the hire. He says he has issues with a member of a Democrat’s office dealing with Republican lawmakers.
