Medicaid Refuses Surgeries

Two Illinois women are seeking a rare type of organ transplant, but they have learned that the Illinois Medicaid program considers the surgery experimental and won't pay for it.
The women are trying to get multi-visceral transplants, which involve transplanting the intestine and other organs such as the liver and pancreas.
The state’s Medicaid program says their decision is based on a recommendation from an ethics panel that studied the procedure.
No hospitals in Illinois perform the surgery. The two women were both seeking treatment in Indiana.
