Zumwalt-Joplin Trial

The defense attorney for a woman accused of killing her 8-year-old says police “crossed the line,” when they questioned her after the child went missing.
The statements were made on behalf of 30-year-old Mary Zumwalt-Joplin in Franklin County Court yesterday. She was questioned twice within a few hours after the body of her daughter, Alexus Nicole Smothers, was found in her basement.
Zumwalt-Joplin’s attorney says excessive force was used when the police forced her to look at a picture of her dead child, among other tactics. Her attorney wants the statement’s she made to police suppressed in court.
The Franklin County State’s Attorney says Zumwalt-Joplin was given her rights and was voluntarily talking to police. According to a video played in court Friday, Zumwalt-Joplin gave several different versions of what happened and named several other possible suspects before saying the death was an accident and she hid the body.
A pre-trial conference is set for July 18.
