The city of West Frankfort plans to invest in higher education in a big way.
“It’s a blessing, the fact that Morthland College came here, and they want to be here. Other communities have tried to lure them away, because, you know, it can be a tremendous asset to have a college in your community.”
West Frankfort Mayor Tom Jordan says the fledgling college will need financial support from the city as it plans to build classroom space and student housing.
The mayor announced last night that he will ask the city council to give Morthland College money from Tax Increment Financing districts for the next ten to 15 years.
According to Mayor Jordan, if the college succeeds, it will do more than just pay back the city funds.
“Morthland College has a very high potential of changing this community forever and making it very highly economically developed.”
