Lawmaker's Aide in Trouble

A former aide for an Illinois lawmaker will be in court Thursday for a hearing after pleading not guilty to charges that he used state money to cover personal expenses and the cost of the legislator's offices at the expense of an anti-aids group.

52-year-old Lloyd Kelly of Chicago is charged with mail fraud.

The indictment by the U.S. Attorney’s Office refers to the lawmaker only as Public Official A.

Kelly founded the Let's Talk Let's Test Foundation with former state Rep. Connie Howard. She retired last year amid reports that the group was under investigation.

Kelly's indictment says he used some of the $1.2 million in state grants to help buy his home and pay campaign and other expenses for the unnamed lawmaker.

Neither Kelly's attorney nor Howard returned calls seeking comment.
