New Chairman, Higher Tuition

The SIU Board of Trustees, which has been disfunctional the last few months, finally acted on several items. Joe Ragusa has more.

The board also voted on several construction items, including the construction of Abe Martin Field and to start a planning process for a new dormitory.

After the regular meeting, a special meeting was held with representatives from SIUC's student-newspaper, the Daily Egyptian.

Reporter and former editor-in-chief Tara Kulash pleaded with the board to help them make up a $55,000 shortfall in their budget. One idea was a $5/semester fee for the paper, which other universities in Illinois have, but the board was lukewarm to the idea.

President Glenn Poshard says he will help the newspaper in anyway he can, and he will form a committee with Chancellor Rita Cheng to raise money.
