Senate Democrats are supporting their own plan to solve Illinois’ pension problems.
Senate President John Cullerton says lawmakers believe cuts from House Speaker Michael Madigan’s bill would be found unconstitutional.
Cullerton’s measure gives workers and retirees a choice of benefit packages. Cullerton says the plan could save around $46 billion and would survive a court challenge.
Cullerton worked with labor unions while drafting the bill.
He says Madigan supported a similar measure last year, and he expects bipartisan support for it.
A Senate committee could hear the bill Wednesday.
