More Trouble for RTO Auto Sales

In Carterville, the owner of an auto dealer under investigation by the Attorney General is now in police custody.
Kevin Darnell was arrested Friday on charges of filing a false police report and illegal use of special (dealer) plates.
The Secretary of State’s office says in a press release that Darnell sold one of his personal cars to a person in Marion without transferring the title, allowing that person to drive on dealer plates for over a year.
RTO Auto Sales has been closed since Wednesday after A.G. Lisa Madigan filed a lawsuit, claiming Darnell sold used cars without informing customers of mechanical problems and then refusing refunds or declining to make repairs.
Additional charges could be filed.
The Secretary of State's Office is asking anyone who bought a vehicle from RTO Auto Sales and did not receive their title work within 40 days to call the agency's Mt. Vernon office at (618) 244-8343.
