Authorities say there was a dispute between the man suspected of killing a south-central Illinois family and at least one of the victims, but they don't know what it was about.
Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said Thursday authorities are running down reports that Rick O. Smith was involved in a custody dispute with a member of the family that was found shot to death Wednesday.
Smith is suspected of forcing his way into the home in Manchester, a small town 50 miles west of Springfield, and shooting the family with a shotgun.
The victims were two brothers, five-year-old Nolan and one-year-old Brantley Ralston; Their father, James Roy Ralston; Their pregnant mother, 23-year-old Brittney Luark and their great-grandmother, 67-year-old Jo Ann Sinclair. The boys' 6-year-old sister was shot and seriously injured, but her condition is improving.
Smith died after a shootout with police.
