The Board of Trustees for Southern Illinois University may soon be reappointed, if a bill sponsored by State Sen. William Haine (D-Alton) passes. S.B. 202 passed the Senate executive committee and will now move to the full Senate for consideration.
The bill requires equal representation of the Edwardsville and Carbondale campuses on the Board of Trustees, and it would also allow the Governor to reappoint the current board.
“There seems to be some internal disputes on the board, a struggle for the chair, and I believe given the past few weeks, it’s time to reconstitute the board and have a rough geographic balance and give the Senate and the governor an opportunity to reset,” Haine says.
He also says that the hostility revolving around the board chairman position is a reason he wants to give the Governor a clean slate with reappointments.

State Sen. Matt Murphy (R-Palatine) doesn’t like the bill.
“It seems a pretty dramatic step to take merely because there’s some internal divisions on the board. Are we going to inject ourselves every time there is a board that can’t get along in this manner?” Murphy said.
Haine says he has not met with the governor or the board of trustees and does not know if they support the issue. Several members of the Board declined to comment on the situation at the last meeting last week.
