SIU Board of Trustee member Roger Herrin is denying claims he wants to reduce the minority population at SIU.
This comes after the NAACP accused Herrin of making comments that he wanted SIU to slow down the recruiting of minorities, specifically black students from East St. Louis and Chicago.
They called him a cancer on the growth of the Board.
Melvin Terrell, who was one of the three appointees by the Gov. that were rejected last week, says he’s had no contact with Gov. Pat Quinn about Trustee Roger Herrin or the possibility of either him or Herrin becoming board chairman.
That was a claim Poshard made Thursday at the cancelled board meeting.
A special meeting will take place tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at the Student Center in Carbondale. The board can still meet without the three rejected appointees, but every other member will need to be there in order to reach a quorum.
Sen. Bill Haine of Alton has introduced legislation that would require three trustees to be graduates of SIU in Carbondale, and three to be from the university's Edwardsville campus.
That move came days after the Illinois Senate overwhelmingly rejected Gov. Pat Quinn's appointments of replacements for three SIU board members whose terms recently expired.
All of Quinn's nominees graduated from the Carbondale campus.
Quinn has asked the Senate to reconsider his selections.
If Haine's bill passes, it would require the reappointment of all current trustees.
