Pensions Poll

Lawmakers have been kicking around ideas regarding pensions for the last few weeks. The latest proposal says the income tax hike of 2011 should stay permanent.

A new poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy says over 63 percent of respondents oppose that idea.

However, another proposal says that the cost of teachers pensions should be shifted to schools.

"There's no doubt about it, that would be one of the biggest deductions from our budget," says SIU President Glenn Poshard.

The poll says that respondents are split on that issue, 45.1 percent in favor of the shift compared to 42.6 percent opposed. However, the poll indicates that a large amount of those in favor of the shift come from the Chicagoland area, where schools already cover the cost of the teacher's pension system.
For more on the poll, including how people feel about the retirement age, cost of living increases and raising taxes to pay off the pension deficit, here is the release from the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute: http://www.paulsimoninstitute.org/images/PDF/spring2013/pension.pdf
