Harrisburg Bars

Harrisburg is another step closer to tighter laws on alcohol sales.

Eric Gregg, the town’s Mayor and Liquor Commissioner, officially proposed his new restrictions regarding how late local bars can stay open at last night’s city council meeting.

Gregg says he is pushing to have bars open no later than midnight.

"We look at, statistically, when we're having our biggest issues, and it's after midnight," Gregg says, noting that bars in the area stay open until 2 a.m. under the current laws.

"That's not going to work anymore," he says. "I can only think of six things that can happen at 2 a.m.: one of them is going to bed, which is positive. The other five are terrible."

The proposal also effects the times liquor stores can open and how many days bars will have a special allowance to stay open later, like on the Super Bowl.

Gregg initially announced his intentions for stricter laws shortly after a man was stabbed in the parking lot of a local bar on the morning of New Year’s.

The city council will vote on the new laws at their next meeting in March.
