A large collection of World War II aircraft is making its way to southern Illinois this weekend to honor veterans.
The Commemorative Air Force will make its way to the Southern Illinois Airport on Friday and Saturday morning and then will fly to the Williamson County Airport, where it will stay until Sunday.
SIU Aviation Professor Dr. David NewMyer says the collection includes the only Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber still in existence, which is called FiFi.
“It's unique, and we're very lucky to have that airplane coming in," NewMyer says. "David Oliver, one of the pilots, is an SIU graduate, and he was mentored and taught by Dr. Charlie Rodriguez, one of our aviation faculty.”
