Illinois motorists are reminded that this week is Work Zone Awareness Week.
Gov. Pat Quinn kicked off the week Monday in Morton outside Peoria in central Illinois. That's where a $93 million construction project is under way at the interchange for Interstate 74 and Interstate 155. The effort aims to urge motorists to slow down and drive safely in highway work zones.
Transportation officials say there are more than 7,000 work zone motor vehicle accidents in Illinois every year. Last year 19 people died in work zone crashes in the state. Two of those people were highway workers.
