Ninety-one-year-old Ernest Fager always wanted to finish high school. But World War II and a calculator got in the southern Illinois man's way.
Only now can the Murphysboro resident say, "Mission accomplished."
WSIL-TV (http://bit.ly/1c1MO6y) reports that Elverado High School in Elkville surprised him Thursday night by awarding the Purple Heart recipient an honorary high school diploma.
Fager's relatives had lured him to the school about 13 miles north of Carbondale on the ruse that he was attending a presentation of a possible donation to the food pantry where he volunteers.
Fager had only an eighth-grade education and fought in the Pacific during World War II.
He says he tried to get his GED four years ago but was foiled because he couldn't figure out how to use the calculator.
