A Democrat from eastern Illinois says he will enter the race for Republican U.S. Rep. John Shimkus' seat.
Eric Thorsland of Mahomet told The News-Gazette in Champaign on Thursday that he's entering the Democratic primary. Anti-abortion activist Angela Michael of Highland has also said she plans to run in the race.
Shimkus' 15th District is heavily Republican. It covers parts of 33 Illinois counties and runs from Hoopeston along the Indiana state line to Collinsville. That's where Shimkus is from.
Thorsland made clear he sees Shimkus as a formidable candidate who has a well-financed campaign.
But he criticized Shimkus for remaining in office too long and for party-line votes. Shimkus has been in Congress since 1997.
Thorsland is a 52-year-old father of three.
