Enrollment is down at SIU Carbondale this Spring by over 1,000 students.
Total enrollment is 17,152 students for the spring semester, a drop of seven percent from this time last year. Chancellor Rita Cheng says that the drop was expected due to low fall enrollment, so they were able to plan ahead.
"We made adjustments to our budget knowing that we wouldn't have as much tuition revenue," Cheng says, noting they also made changes to the available curriculum in the Spring for lower enrollment as well. "So we don't have to make any adjustments internally.."
Cheng says the university is around 83% of the fall enrollment, which is what she expected. She says she was worried that more cuts to the budget might have been necessary if that number fell.
With the influx of new applicants, up nearly 1,000 from last year with time still left for more applicants, Cheng says she’s hopeful the trend will reverse soon and SIU will see enrollment increases.
