SIU Cuts

A budget has not been decided on in either Washington or Springfield, and the uncertainty around the fiscal cliff, sequestration and pension reform has SIU President Glenn Poshard worried about the future.

"We can't even plan our budget until we find out what the state is going to do," Poshard said on the Morning Newswatch with Tom Miller. "We're being told right now by some people in Springfield that we're probably going to sustain another 4-to-6-percent cut."

That cut in funding could mean a loss of $10-million dollars, although that figure could change once pension reform and a federal budget have been agreed upon.

Poshard joined the morning newswatch yesterday, and he said that he’s frustrated with the federal government about their indecision on what cuts need to be made.

"They just say oh well, it's too complicated or we'll never agree, so we're going to cut everything six percent or eight percent or whatever," Poshard said.

Those cuts will need to be addressed by March 1st, while the governor’s office is expected to propose a budget around the same time.
