Police: Murphysboro Man Dead After Explosion

Murphysboro Police say a man is dead after he turned on the gas in his house and started a fire, causing an explosion.
Authorities say the incident started around 1 this morning in the 1600 block of Oak Street.
54 year old Thomas Allan Miller allegedly coaxed a neighbor – 28 year old Brandi Holderfield - to his house and beat her with a hammer. Holderfield fled, and Miller told police he would blow up his home if they came inside.
Police were able to shut off the gas meter outside while talking with Miller. He told them he had a firearm, and they backed away from the home at that threat.
A fire started in the house and two explosions blew out some of the home’s windows.
Miller was found unconscious inside the home by Murphysboro Fire fighters. He was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Memorial Hospital.
