Williamson County Sheriff Bennie Vick would like to alert residents to a phone scam that is working through our area.
In this scam, a male caller claims to be from Publisher’s Clearinghouse. He tells the intended victim they have won a prize, and that it will be delivered later today. The male caller then says they have paid all of the Federal taxes, but the intended victim must cover Illinois taxes. The intended victim is instructed to purchase three Green-Dot Money Pak reloadable pre-paid cards, then provide the caller with the control numbers for the cards during a future phone call.
The caller is described as being very polite and very well-spoken. There is no trace of any accent, and he is described as being professional and believable.
Sheriff Vick would like to remind residents to never give out personal information over the phone, and to never transfer money to a person or business you are not familiar with.
