Obama Signs Disaster Declaration for Brookport

Federal aid is on the way to Brookport and other Illinois communities affected by the Nov. 17 tornadoes.

President Barack Obama signed a federal disaster declaration Tuesday, making grants for temporary housing and home repairs and low-cost loans available.

And disaster-relief efforts in Brookport are also getting a boost from a couple of the area’s largest employers.

The Caesars Foundation, a private foundation funded by Caesars, which owns the Harrah’s Metropolis Casino and Hotel, has donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross for rebuilding efforts.

And Honeywell’s Metropolis Works facility has donated $10,000 to fund a special hazardous waste collection. Those funds will be used to pay for containers to collect storm-related household hazardous waste such as detergent, oil and batteries.
