No Budget, No Pay

The US House of Representatives voted to pass the No Budget, No Pay Act yesterday that set the issue of the debt ceiling aside for another few months.

The bill requires a budget resolution by April 15th and allows the Treasury Department to pay existing bills through May 18th.

Republicans support the idea of raising the debt ceiling to pay bills, as long as spending cuts are also addressed.

Congressman John Shimkus joined us on the morning newswatch today and said the ball is now in the court of the Democrat-controlled Senate.

"All we want to do is get regular order and get the Senate involved in this debate," Shimkus said. "They really haven't passed a budget in four years."

Democrat Bill Enyart also voted to pass the bill. Of the 17 active members of the House from Illinois, only three voted against the bill (Luis Gutierrez, Danny Davis and Jan Schakowsky), all Democrats. Bobby Rush, a Democrat from Chicago, abstained from the vote.
