Illinois National Guard soldiers and airmen are set to start an unprecedented round of military furloughs next week.. They will be living with 20 percent less pay and be expected to do their jobs in four days each week instead of five.
Military technicians such as helicopter pilots and truck mechanics are affected, along with civilians like pay and finance clerks who keep the Guard running.
The furloughs are part of a nationwide budget cut.
National Guard officials say about 1,500 guard personnel will be furloughed in Illinois.
Officials are warning the cuts could affect the National Guard's response time in disaster situations.
