Murphysboro, West Frankfort Schools Offer Free Student Meals

Students in two area communities can eat breakfast and lunch for free all school year.

There are more whole grains and fresh fruit and vegetables on breakfast and lunch trays, and no lunch money at all being collected in Murphysboro and West Frankfort school cafeterias this year.

“Parents seem to be very receptive to the fact that it’s gonna be a huge cost savings for them throughout the year – that they’re not gonna have to send lunch money to school. Especially in this community where we have the highest unemployment rate in the state, and we deal with a lot of poverty issues," says West Frankfort Superintendent Greg Goins.

The federal Community Eligibility Option is designed to put more emphasis on healthy eating in poverty-stricken communities.
