Local Veteran Receives Medals After Long Wait

A local veteran of World War II is receiving medals after waiting for almost seven decades.

87-year-old Bueford McClerren of Mount Vernon was honored at a ceremony yesterday in Carterville. He received a Bronze Star, a Good Conduct medal, a World War II victory medal and a Combat Infantry Badge.

He earned the awards during his service from November 1944 to May 1946, but did not receive them because of an oversight.
