The governor is not panicking over a $1 billion shortfall in funding for various state programs.
The comptroller this week identified money running short in the Department on Aging, Department of Children & Family Services, Workers Compensation and the Health Insurance Reserve Fund, and suggested the state re-allocate money from programs and agencies that are operating under budget.
Gov. Pat Quinn says that’s probably what he’ll do. “As we go through the budget year … you have to make adjustments. Some agencies may have a little more money than expected. That might have to be re-allocated,” he said.
He says these re-allocations are common and he expects bipartisan support in the General Assembly.
The state fiscal year is just over the half-way line; it ends June 30.
