The former director of Illinois' Department of Children and Family Services has died after battling cancer — a month after he'd resigned for health reasons.
Richard Calica's wife, Judy, told The Associated Press yesterday that he died Sunday. He was 67.
Speaking from their Highland Park home, she described her husband as "the funniest, smartest, sweetest, handsomest man" she'd ever met. She added, "He just got better with time."
Calica resigned after his cancer diagnosis. In a yesterday statement, Gov. Pat Quinn called Calica "a dedicated advocate for ... vulnerable children."
Judy Calica says she and her husband got into social work, in part, because they'd given their own child a good start in life. She said she and her husband "wanted no less for all children in Illinois."
