Nearly 50 Illinois counties declared state disaster areas, following heavy rain. State officials are working to get federal assistance for the communities.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Mississippi Valley Division Commander, Major General John Peabody says it's a dangerous situation for those who live along rivers and should not be taken lightly.
"We've already had several levees both on the Mississippi as well as the Illinois River overtopped, fortunately thank the Lord nobody has been killed yet, but it's not without possibility."
The Big Muddy River in Murphysboro is in the minor flood stage, it was a little under 26 feet this morning with flood stage starting at 22 feet. The river is expected to rise another foot by tomorrow and start receding.
