El Greco Closes

El Greco in Carbondale is closing its doors, and employees are unsure when and if those doors will be open again.

Chan Patel bought the restaurant and Old Town Liquors, which reside in the same building. The store was going to close Wednesday night, but they still had lines out the door when they stopped taking orders.

"We actually quit taking orders at 7 o'clock and we weren't done making the orders until about 9:30 or 10," employee Andrew Horton says. "We had a line out the door for a solid three hours."

The employees say they decided to open the place up Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. just to give fans one last chance to enjoy the food since they had to turn so many people away Wednesday night.

Horton says they weren’t told about the closing until noon the day they were supposed to close, and he says the new owner hasn't met with any of the employees regarding the future.

"We haven't met the new owner. He doesn't seem to have too much of an interest in the restaurant-side of things," Horton says.

Another employee, Alex Ryterski, says the possibility of El Greco reopening hinges on someone renting out that side of the building from Patel.

"I don't know if we're going to be temporarily closed," Ryterski says. "I don't know, there were a couple people that said (we'll stay open), but it just seems like nobody is going to pick it back up."

Patel says he is currently looking for a third-party to rent the property and hopes to have one in the next few weeks. Old Town Liquors will remain open.
