Marion Mayor Bob Butler is celebrating 50 years in office. He is the country’s longest active serving mayor.
A statue of his likeness was unveiled at Tower Square yesterday, which was paid for entirely by donations.
At a ceremony in his honor, he joked around. When he originally ran for office in 1963, one of his platforms was to fix flooding on Illinois 37 near Main Street.
He says was able to fix the problem, but 25 years later. He says if it wasn’t for his longevity he wouldn’t have been able to make good on that promise.
