The Attorney General’s office is now handling the investigation into Johnston City’s police chief.
Vernon Campbell is accused of striking former officer Tim Patrick on Feb. 9. Patrick is seeking criminal battery charges and says he was let go from the Johnston City Police Department after he filed a complaint with the Illinois State Police.
Williamson County State’s Attorney Chuck Garnati requested a special prosecutor for the case because of a close working relationship with Campbell.
