EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — An Air Force staffer stationed at the Scott Air Force Base is jailed without bond after being accused of possessing pipe bombs he told investigators he planned to unleash on local sex offenders.
Twenty-four-year-old Justin Vangilder made a court appearance Monday in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis. He faces three felony counts of possessing an unregistered destructive device.
A federal magistrate assigned Vangilder a public defender and ordered him jailed without bond.
An FBI agent's affidavit filed with the criminal complaint alleges Vangilder's suspected bomb-making came to light last Wednesday. That's when an informant told Air Force investigators that Vangilder showed him the bombs.
FBI searchers of Vangilder's home found the devices the next day.
