A Carbondale Police Officer has been recognized for his role is stopping a potential active shooter situation.

Patrol Sergeant Guy Draper received the Valor Award from the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police for his actions on October 21st, 2017.

On that night, Draper was on foot patrol when he heard gunshots coming from the alley of business. As Draper approached he saw the suspect firing a handgun into a crowd of people. Draper fired at the shooter, causing him to take cover. When the shooter re-emerged, Draper fired again, hitting the shooter and ending the threat.

Carbondale Police then performed first aid on the shooter, who was eventually taken to a St Louis hospital. No other injuries were reported that night.
