Illinois’ budget for the coming year could see a $400 million bill tacked onto it. That’s how much state workers are owed in back raises that could be paid out immediately.

The Illinois Labor Relations Board denied Gov. Bruce Rauner’s request to send a ruling on an estimated $412 million in automatic raises owed to 14,000 members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 to another administrative judge. Rauner froze the step increases in 2015, saying lawmakers never appropriated the money to give them out. AFSCME says they’ll ask for all of the money to be paid immediately.

Rauner’s office responded to the ruling, saying “The courts have referred this matter to the Illinois Labor Relations Board – they are currently making decisions about what the next steps are and will help determine how we proceed.”
