General State Aid payments to school districts are due tomorrow – and there’s still no legal mechanism for the state to issue them. The state’s new budget allocated money to fund public schools – but required an overhaul of the school funding formula before the money can be spent.

House lawmakers will hold a hearing in Chicago today to look at the changes Gov. Bruce Rauner made when issuing his amendatory veto of Senate Bill 1—the legislation passed May 31 to change the school funding formula.

Yesterday, the Illinois State Board of Education said its analysis of how the change will affect schools will have to be redone, because the state’s department of revenue notified them of errors in the data it provided.

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the state senate is expected to move to override the governor’s changes to SB 1 – Senators have been called back to Springfield on Sunday. The matter would then go to the House, where Democrats would need to get some Republicans to sign on to get the supermajority they would need to override the governor’s changes.
