CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — An email sent by a University of Illinois administrator says the school’s flagship campus is planning its first layoffs of civil-service workers as a result of the state financial crisis.

The Monday email from Associate Provost for Human Resources Elyne Cole says civil-service hiring was frozen April 18 and departments were told to decide how many employees to cut due to a lack of funding by the state. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the email.

Ann Zettervall is president of the union that represents the school’s 1,300 civil service workers. She tells the AP these would be the first layoffs of this kind, though she did not know how many, and she has warned the union members to prepare.
