SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois House Democrats are trying to line up votes to reverse Gov. Bruce Rauner on legislation they say will keep labor peace.

The Republican governor vetoed the bill in July. It would provide for an arbitrator to step in if contract negotiations break down between the Rauner administration and workers represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

The union — fearing Rauner’s attempts to curb labor power — says pulling an arbitrator in to decide a deadlock would prevent a strike or a government lockout. But Rauner officials say it takes away from taxpayers the power to decide how much the state can afford to compensate its workers.

Override success in the House is uncertain.
