A man is behind bars after stealing a first responders’ vehicle and crashing head-on with a Carbondale Police vehicle.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Grant Choate threw chairs and bricks at patrons in the Vets Tavern in Dowell. One person was allegedly struck in the head with a shovel by Choate. First responders arrived on the scene to tend to that person.

Choate allegedly stole the first responders’ vehicle after unsuccessfully trying to steal two other cars. Officers spotted Choate in the vehicle at a fuel station in Elkville.

Choate sped away from the station, tearing off the gas nozzle and hose.

Choate then made it to Carbondale where he lost control of the vehicle and struck a Carbondale Police cruiser head on.

Choate was arrested, and several charges are pending.
