SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A state audit has found that Illinois officials are not doing all they can to determine whether children are eligible for state-subsidized health insurance.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports that the state did not conduct required annual reviews to determine qualification for the program called Expanded All Kids.

The audit says operators also didn’t verify incomes as required to ensure eligibility. Some received benefits after age 19 and nearly 300 recipients had more than one identification number.

Sen. Dale Righter is a Mattoon Republican. He says the audit shows that Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration is not ensuring proper use of Medicaid money.

Januari Smith is spokeswoman for Quinn’s Department of Human Services. She says the administration has made “tremendous progress” in ridding the system of waste and fraud.
